The Day Of…
Ten years ago a day that should not be forgotten for me was greeted by skepticism. I was a freshman in college, my first year out of the house living over 1500 miles away from my family. The day started as any other class day, I was up getting ready for my marketing class. While brushing my teeth in the third floors communal bathroom listening to the radio. The music broke and the DJ said he was handed a piece of paper, saying that there was either a bomb or a plane hit the World Trade Center. Then he went on saying this must be a joke and threw the paper away. We live in the United States, this type of thing doesn’t happen on our soil, or so the population thought prior to that day.
So without a second thought, my roommate and I walked to our marketing class which was in the business building. The class was held right next to a wall of TVs normally tuned to different news and business channels, but today they were all in sync. Imagine seeing the news of 9/11 not on a TV but a wall of them, in moments something that wasn’t really happening, was happening in full force.
I don’t remember much after that, classes were canceled for the rest of the day but I still had football practice. The coach told us the best thing we could do about what happened in New York was to keep on with our lives. I was at a Christian college, I thought the best thing we could do is come together and pray. Maybe the campus did, while I was running and popping pads.
Ten Years Later…
Things have definitely changed for me. I am back in California, married and have a daughter. Though America is still deployed in the Middle East. Friends and family have completed multiple tours, luckily with no physical harm to them, but some of their friends did not make it back.
Part of me wishes I joined the fight back in 2001, if anything just to unleash some “holy” rage on any co-conspirators that harmed my country. But really if I did I most likely wouldn’t have the wonderfully normal life I have now, with my beautiful baby girl. Because of that I am so appreciative of the sacrifices made and continued to prevent any further attacks on US soil by our troops.
